Grand Seven Day Countdown Programme for the 12th International Day of Yoga Held at Parmarth Niketan
As part of the nationwide “Gangotri to Gangasagar” International Day of Yoga Countdown Campaign, and marking the 7-Day Countdown to the 12th Annual International Day of Yoga, a grand and inspiring yoga programme was held this morning at the sacred Parmarth Ghat on the holy banks of Mother Ganga in Rishikesh. The event, which was broadcast live on YouTube, brought together yoga practitioners, spiritual leaders, government representatives, and community members in a collective celebration of health, harmony, and holistic well-being.
The programme formed part of the larger national movement leading up to the 12th International Day of Yoga on 21 June, as communities across India united under the inspiring theme of “Har Ghar Yoga, Har Ghat Yoga.” Participants gathered on the holy banks of the Ganga in solidarity with millions of people practicing from their homes and communities across the country, contributing to the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to bring the transformative benefits of yoga to every corner of India and the world. The event also aligned with the Ministry of AYUSH’s efforts to build momentum toward a record-breaking global participation initiative, demonstrating yoga’s power to unite people across geographic, cultural, and spiritual boundaries.
The programme was jointly organized by Parmarth Niketan in partnership with the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, the National AYUSH Mission, Uttarakhand and the Indian Yoga Association, bringing together leading yoga institutions, government agencies, and wellness practitioners in a shared commitment to promoting holistic health and well-being.
The event was graced by the presence of Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji, President of Parmarth Niketan; Pujya Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswatiji, International Director of Parmarth Niketan; representatives from the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY); officials from the National AYUSH Mission, Uttarakhand; the District Ayurveda and Unani Officer (Pauri); the Additional District Ayurveda and Unani Officer (Tehri Garhwal); and numerous distinguished guests, yoga leaders, and public representatives.
A special video message, recorded the previous evening by Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji in observance of his morning vow of silence, inspired participants to embrace yoga not merely as a practice, but as a way of life rooted in conscious living, compassion, and connection. Reflecting this year’s International Day of Yoga theme of “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” (Swasth Aayu ke liye Yog), Pujya Swamiji emphasized that the true measure of life is not how many years we live, but how much life, vitality, purpose, and joy we bring into each year. He shared that yoga empowers individuals at every stage of life to cultivate physical health, mental resilience, emotional balance, and spiritual well-being, enabling people to age with grace, dignity, and vitality.
He shared, “The sacred journey from Gangotri to Gangasagar is not merely a geographical journey along the holy banks of Mother Ganga; it is a journey of consciousness. Yoga connects us to ourselves, to one another, and to nature. As we celebrate the International Day of Yoga, let us make yoga a daily practice and transform wellness into a way of living.”
The gathering was further enriched by a deeply moving guided meditation led by Pujya Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswatiji, inviting participants to connect with the sacred energy of the Himalayas and the timeless spiritual heritage of Rishikesh.
“For millennia, sages, saints, and seekers have come to these holy banks of Mother Ganga to experience the deeper dimensions of yoga. The same life force, the same prana, continues to flow through these Himalayan foothills and through each of us today. As Ganga flows effortlessly toward the ocean, may yoga flow naturally into our lives—connecting us more deeply with ourselves, with one another, with nature, and with the Divine.”
More than 500 enthusiastic participants then joined together for the Common Yoga Protocol, which was conducted in both Hindi and English by Dr. Indu Sharma of MDNIY and Yogacharya Ganga Nandini of Parmarth Niketan. The 45-minute session included a series of yogic practices designed to promote physical health, mental clarity, emotional balance, enhanced immunity, and overall well-being.
Practicing yoga on the holy banks of the flowing Ganga, surrounded by the Himalayan foothills and the spiritual vibrations of Rishikesh, the Yoga Capital of the World, created a truly extraordinary experience for all present. The sacred atmosphere of the river, the rising morning sun, and the collective intention of hundreds of practitioners transformed the gathering into a celebration of wellness, unity, and spiritual connection. Participants shared that they felt deeply refreshed, rejuvenated, and inspired, carrying with them a renewed sense of peace, vitality, and purpose.
The programme highlighted the profound connection between yoga, nature, and collective well-being while reinforcing the message that yoga is a powerful tool for building healthier individuals, healthier communities, and a healthier planet.
The “Gangotri to Gangasagar” countdown initiative continues its journey along the banks of the sacred Ganga, symbolically carrying the message of yoga from the river’s revered source to its confluence with the sea. Following yesterday’s programme in Gangotri and today’s successful event in Rishikesh, the next countdown programme will be held in Haridwar, continuing this powerful movement of wellness, unity, and transformation across the nation.
Among the many officials and supporters present were District Officer Dr. Shailendra Pandeyji, National Ayush Mission’s team Shri Krishna Kantji, Smt Vandan Dangwalji, representatives of the National AYUSH Mission and Ayurveda departments, members of the Indian Yoga Association, yoga teachers, practitioners, and community leaders who collectively contributed to the success of the programme.
As the world prepares to celebrate the 12th International Day of Yoga on 21 June 2026, today’s gathering at Parmarth Niketan served as a powerful reminder that yoga is far more than a physical practice—it is a living tradition that nurtures health, harmony, inner peace, and unity. From the sacred banks of Mother Ganga, the message flowed forth with clarity and purpose: Yoga belongs to everyone, everywhere, and has the power to transform both individual lives and our collective future.
