Faith and Food Converge at #2015Parliament
Pujya Swamiji was so deeply impressed and touched by the volunteers and organizers of the free langar at the #2015Parliament. He lauded Respected Bhai Sahib Mohinder Singh Ahluwalia, the third in line of Sikh Spiritual Leaders of Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha (GNNSJ), with whose vision, commitment and leadership the nourishing, vegetarian meals were available free to all throughout the five day Parliament of the World’s Religions, serving on average between 5,000-7,000 people everyday.

Pujya Swamiji shares with everyone that Langar began with the Guru Nanak Dev Ji in the late 1400’s. He was asked by his father to go to the market with twenty rupees and return having made a profit. Guru Nanak instead decided to use the money to feed saints and those in need. He returned home to his father and explained that by giving the money to serve others, he had made a true profit, and a true trade.
Today, Sikhs make and serve Langar in every Gurudwara (Sikh place of worship) in the world. Anyone is welcome to partake in langar, and everyone is seated on the same level as a sign of equality.
At the Parliament, the Langar welcomed volunteers from all faiths and backgrounds to serve. Pujya Swamji said, “On one side there is the Faith Parliament and on the other side there is the Food Parliament, providing and sharing Faith for All and Food for All.” He also shared that by serving the creation so selflessly the entire volunteer team was partaking in the greatest form of worship, truly illustrating prayer in action.
